Preheat your oven to 400 degrees F (200 degrees C).
In a large mixing bowl, combine 1 cup of cornmeal, 1 cup of flour, 2 tablespoons of sugar, 1 tablespoon of baking powder, and 1 teaspoon of salt. Whisk until well combined.
In another bowl, whisk together 1 cup of milk, 1 egg, and 1/2 cup of melted butter until smooth.

In a greased 9x13 inch baking dish, pour half of the cornbread batter evenly across the bottom.

Pour the remaining cornbread batter on top of the BBQ chicken, spreading it gently to cover it.
