instructions
    1

Begin by washing 1 cup of rice and 1/2 cup of lentils under running water until the water runs clear. This will remove excess starch.

    2

In a large pot, heat 2 tablespoons of ghee over medium heat. Once hot, add 1 teaspoon of cumin seeds and let them sizzle for about 30 seconds until fragrant.

    3

Grate 1 inch piece of ginger and chop 2 green chilies. Add them to the pot and sauté for about 2 minutes until the ginger is fragrant.

    4

Add the washed rice and lentils to the pot, stirring to coat them with the ghee and spices for about 1 minute.

    5

Pour in 4 cups of water, add 1 teaspoon of turmeric and 1 teaspoon of salt. Stir well to combine.

    6

Increase the heat to high and bring the mixture to a boil. Once boiling, reduce the heat to low, cover the pot, and let it simmer for 20 minutes.

    7

After 20 minutes, check the consistency. If it’s too thick, you can add a bit more water and mix well.

    8

Once done, remove from heat and let it sit covered for another 5 minutes before serving.

    9

Serve hot with yogurt or pickle on the side for enhanced flavor.
